Title vs. registration in North Carolina
These two documents do different jobs and people mix them up constantly. The title is the document that proves you own the vehicle. It's a single piece of paper (recently a colored security-printed document) issued once by NCDMV with your name on the front. The registration is the document that proves the vehicle is legal to drive on public roads — it's the wallet card and the sticker on your plate, renewed yearly.
When you sell a junk car, only the title transfers. The registration goes with the plate, and the plate goes with you — under NC law, you remove your plate before the buyer takes the car. There's no version of a junk car sale where you need active registration.
If your registration expired in 2018 and the car has been sitting since, you still own the car as long as the title is in your name. The expired registration is irrelevant to the sale.
